The Father

 The Protagonist

The Father is a caring, hardworking, family-oriented character within the story of The Crows. He loves and would do anything to keep his family safe and happy. He also loves animals and has a gentle nature.

Personality References:

These are references based on how I want the character's vibe to be like. He is a happy person, but once his family are all gone, he has an air of sadness around him. He leans on the side of hope that he will one day see them again.

Exploration Sketches:

Version 1

For my initial version, the art style is a bit more realistic. This was before the story plot changed.

Version 2

For the second version, they art style changed due to the story change. I wanted it to look a little cuter, more cartoon because it contrasts the sad tone. I also changed the outfit a little to emphasize the famine-stricken land and the lack of food.

The father looks very young because the average life expectancy at the time was 45 years. His young age plus malnourished body gives him a childlike appearance.

Final:

For the final, I made a few small adjustments to the outfit and the sizing of the hands and feet. I also adjusted the hair to be more solid and easier for animation.

Backstory

The father grew up on a farm with his family. He married at the age of 18 to a neighboring daughter of another farmer family. He was 21 when they had their first son and 24 when the famine hit the nation. His wife then died due to sickness and his first son disappeared. He dedicated the rest of his life to listening to the crows and growing the fruit they told him to grow. He becomes reunited with his family in the afterlife.
